Background of the Study

E-learning platforms have become an integral part of education, particularly in response to the increasing reliance on technology and the challenges posed by traditional learning environments. At Ondo State University of Medical Sciences, the use of e-learning platforms has expanded in recent years, aiming to enhance nursing students' learning experience by providing flexible access to educational content, interactive tools, and real-time communication with instructors and peers. However, student engagement with these platforms remains a concern. Engagement in e-learning is crucial for students to effectively benefit from the resources provided, but various factors can influence their active participation and utilization of these platforms (Oluwaseun & Adeyemi, 2023).

Research has shown that several factors affect student engagement with e-learning platforms, including technological infrastructure, students' digital literacy, and motivation levels. At Ondo State University, issues such as internet connectivity, access to appropriate devices, and students' ability to navigate the platforms may impact engagement levels. Additionally, personal factors like time management, learning styles, and perceived relevance of the content play a significant role in students’ willingness to engage with e-learning platforms. Understanding these factors is crucial for designing more effective e-learning strategies that promote greater interaction and participation among nursing students (Ojo & Abiola, 2024).

This study aims to identify the key factors that affect students’ engagement with e-learning platforms at Ondo State University of Medical Sciences and explore how these factors influence their academic outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the potential benefits of e-learning platforms, nursing students at Ondo State University of Medical Sciences may face barriers that hinder their full engagement with these platforms. Factors such as technological challenges, lack of motivation, and inadequate support services could prevent students from utilizing e-learning resources to their full potential. This study will investigate the key factors affecting students' engagement with e-learning platforms and provide insights on how to enhance their interaction with these platforms.

2. To assess the impact of engagement with e-learning platforms on nursing students' academic performance.

3. To recommend strategies for improving student engagement with e-learning platforms at Ondo State University of Medical Sciences.

Research Questions

1. What are the factors that affect students’ engagement with e-learning platforms at Ondo State University of Medical Sciences?

2. How does student engagement with e-learning platforms impact nursing students' academic performance?

3. What strategies can be implemented to improve student engagement with e-learning platforms at Ondo State University of Medical Sciences?

Research Hypotheses

1. There are significant factors, such as technological access, digital literacy, and motivation, that affect student engagement with e-learning platforms.

2. Greater engagement with e-learning platforms leads to improved academic performance among nursing students.

3. Strategies that address technological, motivational, and accessibility challenges will significantly improve students’ engagement with e-learning platforms.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nursing students at Ondo State University of Medical Sciences and assess the factors affecting their engagement with e-learning platforms. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported engagement data and the variability in students' access to technology.
